SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER 2020
The Political Science Student Union and The Arts Student Committee proudly present
The Political Science Student Union in collaboration with the Arts Student Committee of Chulalongkorn University
Since we have seen how students and ordinary people have faced injustices, and the society that shaped us not to express freely for a long time, as well as we all have to be under the rule of tyranny or dictatorial regime, so even we mostly realised it is time for changes. Historically, Chulalongkorn University in 1953, an Arts Student, Chit Phumisak who has a significant influence on thoughts and Thai academic activities, had changed the content in the Year-Book from the royal image to express and display his compositions about the oppression from elites. Somehow, the current value at the time was very fragile, he has been threatened and abused to serious injury, rested for days in the hospital. Moreover, the University Board also deducted him who did nothing, resulted a year suspension from the University. This was what reflects us as until today.
I, the Chairman of the Project and on behalf of the PSCU, am very pleased to join with the Arts Student Committee holding this long-series event and activities, regarding the strong hope to see changes in the University and the community as well. If you were a student right now, you would know that injustice exists, and injustice should have no place here.
25 September 2020
1600 – 1900 hrs at Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University
Before the Academic Talk “Chit Phumisak in Contemporary Times through Media” which was hold on 25 September 2020. My Team and I had contacted to Raintree Food Centre at the Basement floor of Chamchuri Square, asked to display the poster of “Happy 90th Birthday Chit Phumisak!”
Earlier that day, I had contacted to MRT Sam Yan station to display this poster, and got accepted. But after I sent the Poster to MRT, I immediately got ignored the deal. They accused that all available display monitors were incredibly taken till the end of the year.
Further, our Project had a competition for composition and poem, that were monitored by two faculties of us. Plus, the shirt design, which later available for sell in the 28th Oct Event.
At the Talk day, such a great day that we would realise what Chit had done when he was in the University in the incredible day that it was the day that Chit was born 90 years ago.
Chit Phumisak was a Thai author, philologist, historian, poet, songwriter, and communist revolutionary. His most influential book was The Face of Thai Feudalism (Chom Na Sakdina Thai), written in 1957 under the pseudonym Somsamai Srisootarapan. Other pen names used by Chit include Kawi Kanmuang (Political Poet) and Kawi Srisayam (Siamese Poet). He has been described as the “Che Guevara of Thailand”.
Special speakers: Professor Thipbadee Buakamsri, a professor in History Department at Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University; Aida Arunwong, a famous editor from Read Journal; Narit Pacheui, a writer of “Long Live Chit Phumisak”.
Later that day, speakers and guests joined together celebrated the birthday, and enjoyed the cake together.
Part of the event’s content can be read further here: https://readjournal.org/aan-on-line/18020/
PS: Live event was restricted by the Faculty of Arts’ student affairs staff, but later was allowed to published, which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Buu3MnVEU90
16 and 21 October 2020
1600 – 1930 hrs at Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University
Chit’s Legacies Compared with Contemporary Movements
16 October 2021, our Team had hold a small talk with LIVE on Facebook, which can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/105718597940810/videos/352519276067041
The Talk was focused on the film named “Reach for the SKY,” the oil, reflected how education in South Korea has stolen one’s youth away.
Compared with Thai education system, though it was not Chit era, but the academic way is still the same–students have to study with no passion, but forced to memorise things the State want students to do, and other issues may found in the LIVE video mentioned above.
A special speaker: Thanchanok Kotchapatcharin, a founder of ‘Dare Education’; actually we would have Kulathida Rungreungkiat, a former MP from Future Forward Party, but police officers ran to the Office of the Party that day, so she was not available to the Talk.
16 October 2020, was an incident that I will never forget. Later, this event finished, demonstrators outside the University was running and rush into the University, they were running through in front of face to the another building at the Faculty of Political Science, escaped from the officer forces that used water cannons and tear gas against the peaceful demonstrators.
After finished the event, I helped my colleague prepared and published PSCU Statement condemning the state violence against the People. Another side, My colleagues and I, along with professors, helped organising people, to make sure they are safe and to be home with no worries. We cooperated with the Student Government, asked ambulances, and other basic things for those in needed. This story will not be forgotten that the University is no longer safe under authoritarian regime. I will be writing in details in further Blogs may have.
21 October 2021, our Team had hold the Talk on Arts, an invited speaker, professor Korapin Puapansawat, shared ideas about the common issue through songs that used for protests in Thai history, compared with Red Shirt movement, 14 Oct Movement and so on.
My friend and I had run and moderated this day, which can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/105718597940810/videos/780649002481752
28 October 2020
1600 – 1930 hrs at Prachumkorn Court, Chulalongkorn University
“Tolerance Day” the anniversary that Chit was thrown on the floor and injured to the hospital for a week, later been deducted by the University. All of this is just because he changed the cover of the Student’s Year Book, from HM King Rama V’s portrait to the Coat of Arms instead. So he was accused to be rebel and not loyal to the monarch, leading him to be punished unfairly and inhuman.
We also promote diversity in this day. Accepting other carious ideas and issues, thinking different is not a crime, and that should be normalised in Thai society.
First, My co-Chairman and I had a opening speech, followed by the speech by Professor Chanwit Kasetsiri. After that, the formal Student Governmental Apologising for Historical Injustices speech by Mr Rattakorn Chaiyen, on behalf of the entire Student Union of Chulalongkorn University.
The sessions are Academic Talks on “Tolerance and Diversity” by Prof Vithit Mantaphon, Sunai Phasuk, and Yingcheap Atchanon. And Talk Show by contemporary activists and figures: Siraphop Attohi, Sirawit Serithiwat, Sirin Mungcharoen, Pachara Thammala, and Sitanan Satsaksit.
In this Event, we have two music band from two faculties, and special and incredible exhibitions about what Chit had faced and done. Plus, we have special shirts and alcohol spray for sell!
This Event’s recording may be found at https://www.facebook.com/105718597940810/videos/716578372549238
